All of us may have experienced
having an assignment or project that requires acquiring some important
information from books or in the internet. But are you aware that you might be
committing plagiarism without even knowing it? That’s why I am going to discuss
all about plagiarism in this post so that you can avoid accidentally committing
it.
First and foremost, plagiarism is
the act of getting and using information without citing the source as
reference. It can also be defined as stealing ideas and claiming it as if it
was yours. If someone is caught plagiarizing, he/she will have to face the
consequences like a having failing mark in school and a destroyed reputation.

Actions like getting images from
the web, adding music to your videos, copying someone’s artwork, and performing
another person’s music that is copyrighted are also counted as plagiarism. A
good example of this is using another person’s photograph to join a contest and
claiming it as your photo. Copying your previous work also falls under the same
category, it is also known as “Self-Plagiarism”.

Now you might be wondering about
how to avoid plagiarizing, well there are a few ways to prevent it. First is
paraphrasing, it is a way of restating the information in a new form of text
with other words. You must take note that changing a few words from the
original text is NOT considered as paraphrasing. It must change the whole form
of the text while giving the same information. When you have no choice but to
copy the information itself, you must not forget to cite the source in details
for it to be distinguished easily.
Gaining information and ideas
from other people is a great thing, but stealing it from them is another story.
Always keep in mind that plagiarizing is bad and should be avoided as it
destroys not only your reputation, but also the people’s perception towards
you.
