5 - So Close Yet So Far

“So close yet so far,” those are the words that I uttered while watching Jimmy Liao’s “Turn Left, Turn Right” film last February 23, 2016.

“Turn Left, Turn Right” is a Hong Kong-Singaporean romance movie that was filmed in Taiwan. The story of the movie is based on a book entitled “A Chance of Sunshine” written by Jimmy Liao. The story revolves around two people who are always close to each other but can’t seem to find one another. John Liu is a freelance violinist and Eve Choi is a book translator from a book publishing company. They accidentally met each other at the park where John notices that Eve’s papers are already swimming on the fountain. He helped her gather the papers but things get worse as his music sheets got soaked in the fountain too. While waiting for the papers to dry, they found out that they met each other before when they were younger at the same place. Everything is going really well until the rain comes which made them decide to separate on go home. They gave each other their phone numbers so that they can continue their conversation. But the numbers that they gave to each other got smudged because of the rain. Both of them got sick and later on got confined on the SAME hospital at the SAME time (what a coincidence). They tried their best to find each other again but destiny is just really not in favor for them. They’ve decided to give up and pursue their dreams abroad. Before leaving, they tried to call each other again for the last time and BAM! They finally got the chance to talk to each other again. BUT WAIT the story is not done yet, an earthquake strikes and destroyed the wall that separates their apartment finally making them meet each other.

The movie was full of scenes that make you want to be part of the film and guide the two characters to meet again. Our block was shouting at the AVR while reacting to the scenes as we get attached to the movie. That’s the first time that I saw my whole block get interested in a story like that.
