8 - The Man With Many Faces

Last February 11, 2016, we were able to forget the things that make us stressed and get encouraged by Mr. Jon Santos as he visited Asia Pacific College to conduct his talk about how he was able to live his life in this world. The title of the event is “Follow your passion, I did!” that was held at the APC Auditorium.

Jonathan Adriano Santos is born on January 18, 1966. He is known for his great satirical impersonations. Some of his most popular impersonations are “Sherap Espada” and “Krissy Aquino.” Because of him, the people he impersonates become the topic to everyone including in the social media.

As he starts to talk about his life, he told us that impersonation was never his plan of career. He graduated in UP Diliman with the Degree of BA Economics. While studying, he got involved in many activities that are far from his course such as comedy script writing, stand-up comedy, and of course impersonation. Through his stand-up comedy and impersonation, he was able to fund scholarships to economics students.

In his talk, he gave us 10 lessons that he learned through his experience. And these are:

1. Listen.
2. All learning will enrich you.
3. Learning what you love will make you even richer, make you the richest person.
4. Knowledge is everything.
5. Win the war before you fight it.
6. Adjust, adopt, evolve
7. This is all rootless strategy.
8. Always be grateful.
9. You are never alone in your journey. You are always going to be pilgrims.
10. Love yourself and then let go of yourself. Lose yourself because it’s the only way to live.

The main purpose of this event is to encourage students to pursue what they really want to do in life. It is never too late to speak and decide for yourself and start again.

7 - The Untold Truth About Smoking

According to studies, you reduce your life span by 11 minutes every time you smoke a cigarette. Smoking can cause lung cancer, pneumonia, emphysema, stroke, and even heart disease that’s why we should start making an action to prevent everyone from smoking.

Last October 2015, we’ve had the chance to listen to Engr. Emer Rojas, a cancer survivor who is the founder of New Vois Association of the Philippines. He shared to us his story about how he lost his voice box. He told us that he became addicted to smoking on his teenage years and because of that he got diagnosed with throat cancer losing his voice box. In order to speak, he uses a device called electro-larynx which replaces the functions of the vocal cords to produce sound. Through his experience, he started a campaign against smoking to prevent people from having diseases caused by smoking.

Because of his campaign, he was awarded the 2015 Healthy Lifestyle Exemplar Award. In our school, he presented some cigarette pack samples which have pictures of different diseases that can be obtained through smoking. Hoping that it will discourage these young people who thinks that smoking is really cool. He even gave free T-shirts with an indication of “No Smoking” on it to those students who will admit that they smoke.

Every time that I go to school in the morning or buy something outside the campus, I always notice some APC students and faculty members smoking to kill some time during their break. I guess it is really hard to stop smoking in an instant but I know that the number of smokers in the whole world will soon deplete. To those smokers out there, smoking may look “cool” to you but the truth is it will just reduce your life span.

6 - If Only

SPOILER ALERT! Please keep in mind that this blogpost contains spoilers from the movie itself. If you haven’t watched it yet and don’t want to be spoiled, I suggest to skip this blogpost immediately.

Sana Dati is a romantic drama film that was directed by Jerrold Tarog who is also the one who directed the famous movie Heneral Luna. It is the final installment for his Camera Trilogy and competed in the Cinemalaya Festival which won the Best Film. “Sana Dati” shows that not all love stories end in a happy ending.

The story begins with a flash back with Andrea (Lovi Poe) and Andrew (Benjamin Alves) organizing their newly bought place wherein they will open a flower shop. While Andrea was moving things, she found a ring (a wedding ring perhaps) inside a flower vase and Andrew starts to propose to her. But the scene was then cut and the time was back into the present. In the present time, she is being interviewed and recorded by Dennis (Paulo Avelino) for her wedding. But it turns out that she is going to be married to a different person which is Robert (TJ Trinidad). Later on, Andrea found out that Dennis is the brother of her true love Andrew. They went to the rooftop and discussed the different good things that Andrew has done to them. Meanwhile, Robert noticed that both Andrea and Dennis are missing and starts to search for them in the whole building. When he is about to give up in searching for them, he noticed something dropped from the rooftop leading him to have an idea to proceed to the rooftop. Dennis hides and Robert found and escorted Andrea back to the lounge. And then the wedding started, at the center of the event place, Dennis received a piece of paper with writings on it. He didn’t read it until the ceremony was over the paper was given by Andrea telling him to escape with her after the wedding. He didn’t follow Andrea’s orders and went home instead. After a few weeks, Andrea went to Andrew’s grave and handed back the ring the was given to her. Robert fetched Andrea at the cemetery and went home. While on the road, Andrea said “I love you” to Robert and that’s where the movie ends.

The movie is very different to the other ones wherein there’s an antagonist opposing the love of the protagonist. “Sana Dati” shows reality in the different scenes. I got sad when Andrea says “I love you” to Robert at the last scene. It shows that she accepted everything that happened and starts a new beginning.
